The Elliott Collection of Chinese calligraphy is perhaps the finest outside Asia, spanning the period from the inception of writing as a fine art in the fourth century to the modern era. This exhibition of more than fifty-five hanging scrolls, handscrolls, and album leaves from the Elliott collection, accompanied by a nearly equal number of selections from the Metropolitan's renowned John M. Crawford Collection Jr. and private collections, constitutes the most important display of calligraphy ever assembled in the West.
